3 Ways Cosmetic Dentistry Can Improve Your Smile

Cosmetic dentistry gives dentists the tools they need to transform any smile. It is a branch of dentistry that mainly deals with repairing aesthetic problems.

Teeth are bombarded with many things that can discolor or damage them. Most people will need cosmetic dental treatments at some point in their life.

Cosmetic dentistry treatments that can be used to enhance your smile

Popular cosmetic dentistry treatments used to restore the appearance of a patient’s teeth include the following.

1. Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening treatments are used to remove stains and discoloration from the inner layers of teeth and their exteriors. Whitening treatments performed by dentists are significantly more effective than those purchased over the counter because dentists have access to stronger whitening products that are not sold to the public.

Whitening treatments usually involve applying bleaching agents like hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen carbamide to a patient’s teeth. The whitening solution/gel is usually applied with a mouth tray that the patient bites on and keeps in their mouth for up to 90 minutes.

The American College for Cosmetic Dentistrysstates that a single whitening treatment can improve the color of a person’s teeth by up to eight shades. Most patients reach their desired shade of white with one or two treatments.

Whitening treatments are effective on common types of stains, like those caused by aging, the coloring agents in foods and beverages like coffee, and smoking tobacco. However, it is an ineffective way to whiten teeth that have been discolored by decay, fluorosis, or tetracycline antibiotics.

2. Composite bonding

The application of composite resin is one of the more affordable treatments provided by dentists, and it can be used to fix a variety of cosmetic dental issues, like chipped teeth, broken teeth, spaces between teeth, and stains that cannot be removed with whitening treatments.

The process involves applying a composite resin to the affected tooth. The composite is a mixture of plastics and glass, and it has a putty-like constituency when applied. The patient’s tooth is prepared for the mixture by roughening it up with an etching solution so the composite adheres better to it.

The composite is applied to the patient’s teeth in layers, molded as desired, then hardened with a curing light. It is an irreversible procedure that does not permanently damage teeth.

3. Veneers

Veneers are used to cover flaws on the front part of teeth. These tooth-shaped shells are cemented to the front part of teeth and are designed to look just like real teeth. Veneers can be used to fix several dental issues, like crooked teeth, short teeth, chipped teeth, and discolored teeth.

Getting veneers often requires the dentist shaving down enamel to prevent the restoration from making the person’s teeth appear bigger. This process cannot be reversed.
