Dental Implants

4 Things to Know About a Dental Implant Restoration

A dental implant restoration is a popular form of teeth replacement that involves the placement of a dental implant, abutment and artificial tooth (restoration). While many have heard of the benefits of dental implants, all too many still are unfamiliar with what they are and who they are for.

Important information about dental implants

It is helpful to learn more about dental implant restorations to make the most informed decision possible about treatment. Learning about dental implants also helps patients calm anxieties as they start the treatment process. The following are four interesting, insightful and important things to know about a dental implant restoration

They can replace multiple missing teeth

A dental implant restoration can successfully replace a single missing tooth, a small section of missing teeth or an entire row of missing teeth. There are different types of dental implant restorations. For a single tooth replacement, the general dentist will likely recommend a dental crown. For replacing a section, a partial denture (dental bridge) might work best, whereas a complete denture can successfully attach to implants for a long-term solution to a loss of an entire row of teeth.

They can last for more than 20 years

When compared to other teeth replacement options, such as traditional removable dentures and fixed bridges, restorations that are supported by dental implants last far longer. A major reason for the long-term results is that the dental implants are placed in the jawbone and fuse together with natural bone. Essentially, they serve the same role as the root of a natural tooth. The restoration then permanently attaches to the abutment of the dental implant, so the patient does not have to remove the restoration.

They require a good oral care routine

One of the biggest advantages of a dental implant restoration over other teeth replacement solutions is that they are easy to care for. However, it is still essential for patients to practice good oral hygiene to ensure healthy gums to support the implant restoration adequately. For the most part, patients care for their dental implant restoration the same as they do natural teeth, which includes brushing several times a day, flossing and using mouthwash. It is also encouraged to limit foods that may increase the risk of gum disease and other oral health concerns.

They offer a range of benefits

A dental implant restoration is more than just a way to improve the appearance of the person’s smile. They also offer oral health and functional benefits as well. Most notably perhaps, a dental implant restoration can preserve bone density inside the jaw, whereas the jaw is prone to bone loss without teeth replacement or with traditional dentures.
