Can Dental Implants Replace Any Missing Tooth?

Dental implants are one of the more popular forms of teeth replacement and many cosmetic dentists recommend dental implants to patients due to the numerous benefits they offer. They can be used to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth, and they work well for all types of teeth.

Dental implants for tooth replacement

By learning more about dental implants for tooth replacement, you can decide if treatment is right for you. The following is an overview of dental implants, including what they are, the cosmetic, oral health and functional benefits they offer and much more.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a way to replace missing teeth long-term. It involves a small screw-like post, known as an implant, which is placed inside the jawbone. It serves as the root and primary support of the replacement tooth.

The three components to dental implants are the implant itself, the abutment and the artificial tooth. The abutment connects the replacement tooth and implant together. For the replacement tooth, the cosmetic dentist may use either a dental crown, dental bridge or denture. The dentist will aim to produce the most cosmetically pleasing artificial tooth so that the patient is pleased with the look.

The benefits of dental implants

As is the case with any recommended form of teeth replacement, there are notable and obvious cosmetic benefits. However, dental implants in particular offer benefits that other options may not provide, such as the following:

  • Preservation of bone density
  • Long-term solution
  • Better functionality within the mouth
  • Easy to care for
  • Versatile option

One of the primary benefits is the ability of implants to prevent bone loss from occurring, which is not the case with traditional dentures, fixed crowns or bridges that attach to adjacent teeth. Dental implants also last longer on average than other solutions, and patients care for them the same as they would natural teeth. Cosmetic dentists recommend them because they are the most similar to a natural tooth.

What teeth can dental implants replace?

Dental implants work well when replacing any missing tooth, regardless of the type of tooth and the precise location inside the mouth. They are often recommended for replacing molars and premolars, but they are also an option for replacing more visible teeth towards the front of the mouth as well.

How does the treatment process work?

The first step in the dental implants treatment process is the initial consultation, which typically involves an oral examination, dental X-rays and discussion of the patient’s treatment goals. The cosmetic dentist may recommend preparations for implants placement, such as bone grafting or periodontal disease treatment.

Once the mouth is ready, a time is scheduled for the placement of the implant, and there is a healing process required afterward to allow for osseointegration to take place. Finally, the abutment and artificial tooth are attached once the implant successfully fuses together with the surrounding jawbone. The final attachment completes the cosmetic dental transformation.
