Dental Implants to Replace Missing Teeth

While many people think of dental implants as an extremely modern invention, dental implants have been around since the mid-1960s. However, dental implants have become more widespread in recent years. There are now many options for implants. These include single implants, bridges and dentures.

Single tooth dental implants

For patients who are missing one or more teeth, a single tooth implant may be used. A single tooth dental implant is often used for patients who are missing one tooth. The implant is surgically placed in the jaw. A patient will have one implant for each missing tooth. After the implant has integrated with the jawbone, the dentist will place a crown over the base of each implant. This crown will be matched to the surrounding teeth for a natural look.

Dental implants with bridges

For patients who have multiple teeth missing that are adjacent, a dentist may recommend getting a fixed bridge over the implants. While removable bridges are anchored to the nearby teeth, fixed bridges are supported by implants in the jawbone.

There are several benefits of fixed implant bridges over removable bridges. Because removable bridges are usually anchored to the surrounding teeth, they can cause wear and tear on the patient’s surrounding teeth. However, fixed bridges are supported by the implants in the jawbone. This means that fixed dental implants do not negatively affect the surrounding teeth.

Fixed bridges over implants are generally sturdier than removable bridges. This means that patients will not have to worry about the device coming loose while eating or even talking. The implants can also help preserve bone density so the bridge will continue to fit.

Dental implants with dentures

Traditional dentures generally rest on the patient’s gums. However, implant-supported dentures are supported by a series of implants in the patient’s jawbone. There are a few different types of dentures, including both removable and permanent ones:

  • Ball-attached dentures: this type of denture snaps into a ball and socket attachment on each implant. These dentures are removable for cleaning and comfortable sleeping during the night
  • Bar-attached dentures: this type of denture uses a bar to attach to the implants. The bar will run along the jawbone, connected to each implant. The teeth can be attached to this bar using customized clips. The denture will not shift while eating but is still removable
  • Screw-attached denture: this type of denture is completely permanent in the patient’s mouth. Four or more implants are placed in the jaw and the denture is placed over the implants using a set of screws. Patients will need to clean around this highly secure option using special brushes and other tools
