Healing Process for Dental Implants

The dental implant surgery is not a simple procedure. It can take several months but implants last for many years, which makes them worth it. Like any surgery, it requires recovery time. Having a realistic understanding of the healing process will help you plan for recovery.

What to expect

The dental implant procedure involves replacing missing teeth. It is usually done in stages. Healing time may be needed between procedures and this makes it longer. The healing process may take time depending on a patient, procedures required, the number of implants needed and how a person manages the recovery process. Patients need to learn about the procedure and the healing process.

Healing process

After the placement of implants, the body will naturally react in a process called osseointegration. This process involves the implant integrating with the jawbone. Implants rely on the posts firmly bonding with the bone. Once the implant post is placed, it will be given some time to heal. After they have healed in the jaw, the next step involves placing the abutments and restorations. The process usually lasts for several months and the time may vary depending on a patient.

Sometimes a patient may have to undergo additional procedures to prepare the jawbones for the process. A patient may either need bone augmentation, a sinus lift or ridge expansion. These procedures will also add to the recovery time. A moderate amount of swelling is to be expected after the treatments. An oral surgeon will provide instructions on the ideal aftercare regime and medications to manage discomfort.

In the case of a simple dental implant placement with minimal or no grafting, a person may experience little to no discomfort or swelling after the procedure. A person may only have to stick to a soft diet for some days and to follow a good oral routine. However, sometimes after placement, a person may experience  mild discomfort and minor swelling. These problems can be managed by post-operative management and medication that the oral surgeon will prescribe. In this case, patients may be required to eat soft foods for several weeks after the entire procedure. A patient should then focus on taking proper care of the implants.

How can a patient help in the healing process?

Patients should prioritize their oral hygiene, which will help keep the mouth and implant clean. Regular cleaning will ensure no infection or plaque builds up around the gums. People are usually advised not to smoke, drink alcohol or drink with a straw after the surgery at least until the mouth has healed. Eating healthy soft food is also encouraged.

Ask your oral surgeon about dental implant surgery

The dental implant surgery can meet the needs of a person with missing teeth. Depending on what is involved, it usually takes a long time. Several factors influence the healing time between the procedures. But the good thing is that after the placement of replacement teeth, it leaves a person with a beautiful smile. If you need more information on the healing process, talk to your oral surgeon.
