Snap-On Dentures and Dental Implants

Snap-on dentures are supported by dental implants. They are an effective alternative to traditional dentures, which are supported by the gums and dental adhesives. The major drawback of these is that the adhesives weaken over time and fail to hold the dentures securely. The snaps on snap-on dentures anchor the denture to dental implants to create a more stable connection. This type of dentures does not slip out of the mouth.

The process of getting snap-on dentures

With snap-on dentures, the implants are inserted into the jawbone in front of the mouth. The anterior position is preferred because there is more bone volume there than at the back. The dentist will provide a temporary denture for the patient while the bone heals.

Snap-on dentures have two different types of mechanisms: bar-retained and ball-retained. Both are created from the acrylic base, and the porcelain teeth look like natural teeth.

The healing and recovery period before placing the final denture could last between three to six months, depending on the patient’s health condition. The dentist will perform initial diagnosis on the patient, design and place the dental implants and fabricate a customized denture plate for the patient.

If the patient needs a bone graft surgery, the process may take up to a year or more. To complete the process, the dentist will perform two surgeries on the patient. During the first surgery, the dentist will rebuild the bone. About three to six months later, the patient will undergo the second surgery, during which the implants will be inserted into the gums. The second procedure involves revealing the top of the implant so the attachment mechanism can be connected.

Who is a candidate for snap-on dentures?

Anyone with a missing tooth is a likely candidate for dental implants. Additional treatments may be necessary if oral health problems such as tooth decay or gum disease are present. The dentist will evaluate the patient and develop a treatment plan to produce desired results.

Advantages of snap-on dentures over traditional dentures

Since these dentures are held securely with dental implants, they are far more stable than traditional dentures. This means the patient will not have to worry about their dentures slipping out when talking or eating.

Snap-on dentures do not cause irritation. They are palateless and will not sit on the gum. This ultimately reduces cases of bruises, cuts and abrasions common with conventional dentures.

They are also easier to clean. Although they are connected to dental implants, patients can take the dentures out for cleaning using recommended denture cleaning solutions. They will need to visit the dentist every six months for professional cleaning.

Snap-on dentures are a big confidence booster. Traditional dentures can cause embarrassing moments when they slip, especially in social gatherings. With this type of dentures, patients can smile more confidently in public.

Final note

Snap-on dentures connect to dental implants to give patients who have lost their teeth better life quality. If you would like more information about treatment plans, schedule a consultation with the dentist.
