Veneers Can Close Tooth Gap in Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental Veneers and Dental Laminates Gainesville, GA

Cosmetic dentistry uses restorations like veneers to close gaps between teeth. It is one of the handful of issues that can be resolved with these thin, tooth-shaped shells that are used to cover up the front part of teeth.

How veneers are used to close gaps between teeth in cosmetic dentistry

Veneers are not the standard way to close gaps between teeth. Orthodontic appliances like braces and clear aligners can correct the issue and reposition the patient's teeth. Veneers are solely cosmetic restorations that are used to hide imperfections on teeth or create the appearance of straight teeth. A dentist might recommend veneers as a way to close up gaps between teeth if the patient has other issues that can be fixed with veneers, like deformed, discolored or short teeth.

The process

Dentists use veneers to close up gaps by attaching oversized veneers on the teeth closest to the gaps.  The veneers are strategically placed so it looks like the patient has perfectly aligned teeth, with no spaces between them.

The installation of veneers is a permanent procedure that requires removing enamel from the front part of the teeth being treated. Enamel is removed to make space for the veneer that will be cemented to a tooth. This prevents the tooth from looking abnormally large.

This process cannot be reversed, so the patient will always need some type of restoration to protect the tooth moving forward. There is a way to avoid all this, however. It involves using a special type of veneers called "no-prep" veneers. These are thinner than traditional veneers ,so there is no need to remove enamel. No-prep veneers do have limitations due to their ultra-thin nature.

Once the dentist is done prepping the patient's teeth for veneers, an impression or 3D image of their teeth is taken. The impression or digital model is sent to a lab that makes restorations like veneers. It takes about two weeks for technicians in the lab to make the patient's customized veneers and get them back to the dentist.

The dentist fits the patient with temporary veneers to end the first stage of their treatment. The temporary veneers protect the prepped teeth and give the patient a chance to see what their smile will look like once their customized veneers have been made. Temporary veneers are bonded with temporary cement, so it is easy for the dentist to take them off.

The patient will be called in for their second appointment when their customized veneers are ready. The dentist takes off the temporary veneers and cements the permanent ones in place. Adjustments are made as needed until the dentist is satisfied with how the patient's teeth look.
