DENTAL BRIDGES IN GAINESVILLE, GA
Sometimes called fixed partial dentures, bridges may replace one or several missing teeth. If you are missing teeth, your appearance might not be the only thing that is affected; you may also have difficulty chewing or speaking normally. Your remaining teeth may drift out of place, causing problems with your bite. In the worst cases, the shape of your face may be affected due to missing teeth. It’s important–both aesthetically and physically–to fill the space left by missing teeth.
A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth.
- Typically, dental bridges are constructed by making crowns for the teeth on either side of a space where you are missing a tooth. An artificial tooth (known as a pontic) is then fixed to the two crowns, and this “bridge” is cemented permanently to the adjoining teeth. An alternative to this “traditional” type of bridge is a Maryland bridge, where missing teeth are attached to a metal framework which is bonded to the backs of your existing teeth.
- Bridges generally take three to four weeks to complete. Most bridges require two office visits. First, you’ll come in to have your teeth prepared and have impressions made–these impressions of your teeth will serve as a model for the bridge, which will be custom-made for you. The dentist will make a temporary bridge for you to wear until your next visit; this bridge will help protect your teeth and gums. During your second visit, you’ll receive your permanent bridge, and the dentist will adjust it as necessary to make sure it fits comfortably.
